Local Wet Thanksgiving Week
East Central Florida is in for some weather this week. The rain today is just a taste of what's coming. Already a more than anticipated..there has been a little thunder and some puddles, overall it's been great sleeping weather. Models have been torn about a weak low to tropical storm forming in the Gulf of Mexico & coming over Florida for days. The timing now seems a little later with the worst weather over Florida Friday or Saturday.
Tropics
Tropics have quieted a little with the storm in the Caribbean going to 0% chance of forming. We may see it as a broad low meandering this weekend but conditions are not very favorable. Kirogi formed in the West Pacific, NOAA's floater for it is down. It is currently a Tropical Storm that is expected to bring heavy rains to Southern Vietnam and Cambodia Sunday and Monday.
Three of the six missing from the medicane were found dead, two were found rinsed out to sea. This brings the official death toll to 19.
Fentanyl Shortage Due to Maria The Fentanyl shortage isn't so bad to reduce the supply on the streets but the source coming from Puerto Rico for mainland hospitals, especially the variety mixed into IV bags is coming up short. With most the medical manufacturing in Puerto Rico running on generators, the out put has been less than half of normal. To help make up the difference, compounding pharmacies are working overtime. Tropics The deep Caribbean is trying to produce another storm. NHC gives it a 20% chance and expects the broad low to linger in the area through Monday. MJO isn't going to lend it much help. It is currently enhancing the trough it is attached to, especially the low near 37N 47W. What should be coming from the East Pacific looks very suppressed. Over all the main enhanced area that is forecast to come toward India has backed up a little toward Asia. Flooding in Greece From Guardian News: Published on Nov 16, 2017Drone footage shows the aftermath of flash floods that killed at least 15 people on Wednesday in two coastal towns west of Athens after a night of heavy rain. In the industrial towns of Nea Peramos and Mandra, west of Athens, crumpled cars and mangled furniture are strewn across roads coated in the thick mud left behind by a raging torrent that washed through homes on Wednesday morning • Deadly flash floods cause 'biblical damage' in Athens
As the recovery in Puerto Rico has been slow, the medical industry manufacturing there has struggled, the effects are being felt by hospitals on the mainland. A large supply of saline bags were produced there before Maria hit. Expect to only be given saline if you really need it. The FDA has approved saline from manufactures in countries that aren't usually allowed to help ease the shortage.
Weather Satellite Launch The launch of the Joint Polar Satellite System-1 from Vandenberg AFB was scrubbed last night due to issues that couldn't be resolved before the launch window closed. The launch has been rescheduled for Wednesday at 1:47 PST. Radioactive Cloud Over Europe In early October a cloud of radioactive ruthenium was detected over Eastern Europe. It probably came from an accidental release from a truck or broken pipe, might have been related to the medical industry. Looking back at weather patterns it most likely came from near the southern Ural Mountains, where Russia borders Kazakhstan. The monitoring net across Eastern Europe did well detecting it. Certainly a reminder that pollution doesn't stay in it's country of origin.. Other lessons learned from this incident and more info can be found here. Atlantic Tropics 96L is being given a 40-60% chance to develop into a sub-tropical storm. It is moving Northeast and will likely produce gale force winds.
Still watching the disturbance in the Southwest Caribbean. This could very well become our next invest.
7.3 magnitude earthquake occurred near the Iran-Iraq border region. At least 540 have died. More than 8000 are injured. More info can be found at this article.

As tornadoes raced across Indiana and Ohio yesterday, John Tinney and his storm chasing crew got caught up in an un-warned, rain-wrapped one. Tropics The bit of disturbed weather in the mid-Atlantic Ocean is now 19L. It is moving: East at 6 mph, has a minimum pressure of 1013 mb and a maximum sustained wind of 35 mph. It is not expected to threaten any land areas.
Tropics GPM (Global Precipitation Measurement) passed over the northeastern U.S. on Oct. 29 at 8:36 p.m. EDT. The approximate location of the storm's center at the time of the GPM pass is shown with a large red "L". A large area of intense rain was located in the Atlantic east of the low's center. GMI estimated that rain in that area was falling at rates of greater than 2 inches (51 mm) per hour. The highest storm tops in the system were revealed by DPR to reach heights of about 5.6 miles (9 km). Credits: NASA/JAXA, Hal Pierce The freezing heights could also be seen from this GPM pass and they had good slope. The freezing height averaged 2.1miles high but was just 1/2 mile up over southern Quebec & higher than 2.9 miles well east over the Atlantic Ocean. 94L is no more, fell apart and other weather features got involved. May see 95L and possibly a depression out of that disturbed area in the middle of the Atlantic. 96W is now 28W. 95W and 99B struggle on. China Launches a Large Ship for Installing Wind Turbines |
