Philippe Visits Florida Then Joins Nor'easter

10/29/2017

Comments

Tropics are calming down a little with cooler air settling in across the Northern Hemisphere.

In the Atlantic, Philippe has become a remnant low and is wrapped up in and energizing the front creating an impressive nor'easter.   The next possible tropical cyclone is beginning to pull together out in the mid-Atlantic (now 94L).  NHC has it's odds at 30%.  Models haven't been the most consistent so far with this area of disturbed weather.  It's challenges are shear, latitude, dueling centers and it will probably be large.

93E and Soala is falling apart.  95W is looking gamely.  96W not as gamely but maintaining it's structure.

Philippe in Miami

Tropical storm winds were recorded across much of Southeast Florida last night as Philippe traversed part of the state.  Palm Beach had the highest recorded gust of 75mph which is being attributed to a likely tornado.  Highest sustained wind was 62mph at Fowey Rocks.  The anemometer is a little higher there than most at 42m.  A NWS employee reported damage in Miami to roofs, awnings, fences, power-lines down and small trees snapped.  Had 0.42" of rain from Philippe in Melbourne, Florida.

Restoring Internet in Puerto Rico

Picture
In this picture provided by Project Loon, internet service for parts of Maria stricken Puerto Rico was being launched to the stratosphere on October 18th.  This a project of google's parent company Alphabet and is now giving AT&T customers with a 4G handsets basic internet access, text and e-mail.

Another Loon Balloon was launched from Puerto Rico earlier this year.  It took 12 days to direct it through the air currents to get it to Peru.  From there it spent 14 weeks aloft, ascending and descending more than 20,000 times to catch currents to keep it in the airspace above providing internet service after the flood disaster.

Flooding Continues Well Past Hurricanes

The local flooding across Brevard County continues as the rain just seems endless.  Florida Today put out an article this morning that included video of the Sheriff's Work Farm and K-9/Officer training facility looking more like a swamp than a place for inmates to grow their vegetables.  They also included a video from Harmony Farms.  They are a great non-profit that is underwater and looking for help.

Some of the other badly flooded areas include:
Silver Pines Estates in Rockledge
Rockledge west of Fiske Boulevard
Parts of Fellsmere
Cocoa Near the St Johns River

Below is some of the ongoing flooding in Cocoa published by WFTV earlier today.

Hurricane Harvey hazards are still out there.  A 40 year old man, Jason Courtney was walking under a bridge when he fell down 15 feet through an open manhole.  The Manhole cover had most likely come off during flooding due to Harvey.  He spent six days in sewage.  Eventually a work crew came along, he yelled for help.  They alerted emergency rescue who had him out in an hour.  He was very weak due to lack of food and water and had a broken ankle from the fall.  Officials are asking people to dial 311 if they see a manhole cover off.

With the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) camping in the area, looks like no break for the hurricane weary.  90L has been declared in the Southwestern Caribbean.  Early models show that developing into a possible storm for the Gulf of Mexico over the next several days.  Another area of interest is just south of Florida, being sheared well back into the  Bahamas.  Not many models are developing this but it looks gamely and could affect the track of 90L making the current model scenarios more uncertain.

Locally Brevard County, Florida is under a Gale Warning.  Watch out for those widow makers..more rain too.

90E is active in the Eastern Pacific.  It may get absorbed into the Atlantic drama or try and form as it heads up the coast.
